A couch that won't kill you

Okay, I'm being hyperbolic. Your couch can't kill you, but it can be a very unhealthy addition to your home. Ever since seeing this documentary about the toxic chemical flame retardants injected into foam in furniture and lots of baby products, I've been obsessed with finding a healthy couch. The 1975 California law that effectively required manufacturers to include these chemicals was changed late last year, which means in the next couple years more and more couches will be made without these chemicals. But I needed a couch now and it turns out most couches are still made the toxic way. I looked everywhere and made lots of inquiries. My saving grace ended up being a new, online company called Joybird. I was blown away by their customer service and the functionality of their website. They make their products in the US, without toxic chemicals, and they have an amazing return policy. So I bought this couch and it couldn't have been easier.

Light it Up

As soon as the weather gets a little cold, I do three things: Wear big, ugly, warm socks all the time, spend unreal amounts of time at Target, and burn candles that smell like Christmas and pine trees. Preferrably soy and made in MN. This Pom + Spruce is a recent favorite.

house beautiful

ur bedroom is still a work in progress but for the time being we're happy with the desk area. The main elements: 1. Industrial task lamp 2. Parsons desk 3. Herman Miller chair. I got the little antique side chair from the music school where I work and the shelves are pieces of an antique table paired with Ikea brackets. We are also in love with the paint color-- the perfect dark grey, called Trail Print from Behr.

My favorite handmade (yay!) gift from Christmas was this wooden ampersand
made by my little brother. He's a crafty wiz kid and the & (done in classic Helvetica)
looks great in our dining room.

final touches

Alex and I are working on a fun bedroom/closet improvement and once all the patching, painting, trimming, reorganization and refurnishing is done I can't wait to add some vintage and mid-century inspired artifacts like the sweet etsy finds above. And some air plants because they are awesome.
